Doctor Strange: The Oath (2006)
Doctor Strange: The Oath (2006) is a story that is meant to be an entry point for many readers of Marvel comics who are vaguely familiar with the character but have not fully taken the dive into his stories. In the story, Wong is dying of a fatal brain tumor and after medical professionals failed to find a solution Doctor Strange claims to have a cure for his ailment, but could it be so much more than that. This magical elixir takes Doctor Strange, Wong, and the Night Nurse through a five-issue run to discover what the elixir truly is and why nobody wants them to have it.
This series really does a great job at showcasing Doctor Strange as both a medical professional and a master of the mystic arts, often times through this run making both him and the reader question which of these oaths takes precedent in his life. I would label this series as a great starting point for readers that are as Marvel originally intended, fans of Marvel but are not super into Doctor Strange, or in our modern era readers that are familiar with the MCU version of the character and are looking for a comic with a story and characterization that is similar to that in the movies. For both these reasons, I give this series a Rayburn Seal of Approval.
I personally prefer the strangeness that some creators take this character (look at the Way of the Weird storyline) but this very grounded approach to the character is still essential reading for anyone interested in reading Doctor Strange.
Overall Rating: 9/10
