Devil's Reign (2022)

Devil's Reign (2022) is a crossover event that wraps the 2018 run of Daredevil. It starts with the premise that the mayor of New York, Wilson Fisk a.k.a. Kingpin, outlaws superheroes to try and "clean up the streets of the city". As the reader though, we know that this scenario never works out and rarely will the heroes sit idly by and allow this type of action to be taken against them. This event does change the status of Matt Murdock to the world in ways that I will not spoil here, but still leaves the door open for Matt's next adventures with Elektra once again. As stated before, this event does have a lot of different crossovers with other series, including but not limited to the X-Men, which led to one of my favorite panels with one of my favorite characters, Spider-Man. I left it below for reference. However, at the end of the day this was mainly meant to be a Daredevil story and notably the story between Daredevil and Kingpin was relatively weak compared to the other stories involved. The story between the two is still good and interesting, but just not as good. My other main issue with the story is that the idea of superheroes becoming an outlawed profession has now become an often rehashed story that does not have much more to add to a metaphor or the overall story. It has been explored quite a bit over the history of Marvel but especially so in the last 15 years, notably with Civil War and Kamala's Law storylines. Devil's Reign does not have enough to add to the story idea or the universe overall to justify it taking over multiple franchises, especially since you do have to have read the 2018 run of Daredevil before enjoying it. Overall, it is an interesting and good read, but Devil's Reign is nothing that will blow your socks off. It is a fitting end for this particular Daredevil run but if you are just looking for a story of superheroes being outlawed, then I have other stories or series I would recommend.
